Rheinbahn, established as the Rheinische Bahngesellschaft AG (Rhine Railway Company) in 1896, is the company of local traffic in the North-Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf. Rheinbahn offers public transport service for the neighbouring regions Mettmann, Erkrath, Haan, Heiligenhaus, Hilden, Langenfeld, Monheim, Ratingen, Velbert and Wülfrath as well as Neuss, Meerbusch and Kaarst and operates in further six communities in the surroundings (Duisburg, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Essen, Wuppertal, Solingen, Krefeld).
With 739 vehicles, it conveys, on 111 lines, over 720,000 passengers on working days in a commuting area of 570 square kilometres with over a million inhabitants. In 2014, 220 million passengers rode on Rheinbahn`s 135 city railway vehicles, 168 trams and 430 buses, calling at 3,324 stops with an annual performance of 48.2 mill. km – 130 times the distance from the Earth to the moon. 206,000 subscribers rely on the services provided by Rheinbahn.
With its performance, Rheinbahn ranks fifth in the Federal Republic and is the largest of 20 transportation companies in the Rhine-Ruhr linked transport system (VRR), Europe’s largest transport system, with a total of 19 towns and cities as well as 7 neighbourhoods in the region provided with transport services.
To maintain the core business, Rheinbahn has 2,823 employees on the payroll, of them 110
trainees from 31 countries, and thus belongs to the biggest employers and trainers locally. Repeated ratings in the last few years have graded Rheinbahn with the very good result AA-. The level of cost coverage lies at 84 percent with a reduction in the balance sheet total of -80.0 to Euro -48.5 million. since 2001. The amount to be invested comes to some Euro 700 million in the ongoing decade.
The city of Düsseldorf as well as the neighbourhoods commissioned Rheinbahn, by entrustment agreement, to operate local passenger transportation with buses and trams on a sustained basis.
The spokesman of the Managing Board, Michael Clausecker, is the CEO and manages the concern with Klaus Klar, Managing Director und Industrial Relations Director.
