  The Rheinbahn AG

A historic overview

Very few other Duesseldorf-based companies have made a greater contribution to the city’s genuinely eventful history than the Rheinbahn AG, which the locals call the ‘Rheinbahn’. The development of the new district of Oberkassel before the First World War, the first electric local railway in Europe, the management of Duesseldorf Airport and the world’s first tram restaurant car are just some of the events that bear witness to the Rheinbahn’s regional and national significance for more than 107 years.

Based on excerpts from the work entitled under the Flying wheel that was written in 1996 to mark the Rheinbahn’s 100th anniversary, we will provide you with a series of texts (see hyperlinks) and numerous historic pictures that illustrate the Rheinbahn’s history.

When we developed this website, we were assisted by the author, Reinhard Manter MA, Kaarst and the "Line D" Association (Verein "Linie D") as well as the Duesseldorf Historic Public Transport Association (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Historischer Nahverkehr Duesseldorf e.V. )

Have fun!
