The first example of a
new generation of trams: the 2001 tram operating on line 715.

Equipped for the new millennium with the "Silver Arrow"

In July 2000, the Rheinbahn took delivery of the first vehicle of an entirely new generation of municipal rail vehicles: the "Silver Arrow" ( Silberpfeil ). With a total length of 39.98 metres, this model is the longest one-piece vehicle that the Rheinbahn has ever operated. The "Silver Arrow" has a 100 percent low-floor design and is thus extremely passenger friendly. The 2.4 metres wide train can transport a total of 234 passengers and travels at a top speed of 65 km/h.

The Rheinbahn has ordered 36 vehicles in the 40 metre version and 15 "Silver Arrows" with a total length of only 30 metres. They will predominantly operate on lines 701, 707 and 712, where they will replace the old trams.

As a result of escalating competition in the public transport sector, the Rheinbahn must make its operations more efficient and tap new markets. In addition to optimising business processes in all divisions, the Rheinbahn has also extended its activities to include public rail transportation. In partnership with Moselbahn GmbH, the "trans regio Deutsche Regionalbahn" was founded, in which the Rheinbahn has a 49 percent stake. The transregio commenced services at the end of May 2000 on railways in Rhineland-Palatinate using modern motor coach trains. The company has also submitted bids for the lines between Oberhausen and Duisburg-Ruhrort and to Dorsten.

Co-operations with other companies are also planned in the bus sector. For instance, the Rheinbahn and the Wuppertal Municipal Works took over the Elba bus company of Wuppertal in December 2000. This joint venture will effectively supplement existing structures.
