the line to Neuss
After the success of the local railway to Krefeld, the Rheinbahn founders set their sights on the neighbouring city of Neuss. On 21 st December 1901, an Oberkassel - Neuss line along the banks of the Rhine via the docks. The track was built on the dyke. Although this meant it was safe if the Rhine flooded, the route took it around the village of Heerdt. However, this all changed in 1911/12 when tracks were laid through Heerdt. This new line opened on 25 th February 1912. Yet the old tracks along the Rhine dyke to the wharf in Heerdt remained in place and served as a freight siding for the many factories on Hansaallee.
Both passenger and freight transport developed positively on both lines. The number of passengers using the service increased on the Krefeld line alone from 1.08 billion to 4.16 billion between 1899 and 1904.
