Sectors and fare zones

The Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr which comprises all the transport companies in the greater Rhein-Ruhr area, including Rheinbahn, is divided into "Fare Zones" and "Sectors" to provide a more even distribution of ticket pricing.

The monthly cards/tokens by subscription are issued by the Rheinbahn when the requisite authorised monthly sum is debited for at least 12 months from a current bank account in Germany.

A fare zone is equivalent to a town or several smaller towns/communities. But the larger cities Duesseldorf, Duisburg, Dortmund, Essen and Wuppertal are divided into two fare zones. The fare zones are designated either by the name of the city or the communities which they contain, or are marked with a two-digit figure, as can be seen on the illustration of the two fare zones 42 Meerbusch and 43 Duesseldorf Mitte/Nord.

2.) Sectors

Within a fare zone there are several "sectors", or in rare cases only one.

A sector usually is a quarter of a zone or a smaller community. The border of a sector usually accords to the borders of the quarter or of the community in which it lies.

3.) Short distances

Apart from the fare zones and sectors, there is the short distance fare for short trips.
