"Linie D" Society

The local transport in Duesseldorf is an important part of the city´s history. Starting with the first horse train 1876, it is inseparably connected with the development of the city.

The "Linie D" society is actively involved in the multifaceted history of the Duesseldorf region as well as the city trams, long distance trains, buses, transport companies and the railway carriage construction industry. Rheinbahn and Linie D work closely together so that trips on historical vehicles can still be experienced.

If you want to know more about the association „Linie D" society, or if you would like to help the historical local transport in your spare time, we recommend a visit to the association´s homepage:

Assistance at historical city round trips

Since 1991 the Rheinbahn has been running public circular tours with the old-timer Duesseldorf trams. The personnel on these trips (driver, conductor and tourist guide) work unsalaried for "Line D". The receipts of these trips the Rheinbahn uses for the restoration of the oldtimer city vehicles.

The association also owns some vehicles like this "Rheinbahn-Official Bully"

Conservation of historical city trams and buses

The unique collection of historical Duesseldorf trams needs constant care and, from time to time, minor or major restoration. With support from the Rheinbahn depots, in particular the apprentice workshop, the society helps with materials and manpower in the restoration work.

Documentation of local transport history in word and pictures, in writing and vision, as well as small exhibits

The society possesses much historical material, from the Reichsmark-ticket to the first Verbund timetable. They are also concerned with Rheinbahn archives and with fairly unique exhibits such as the first strap ticket vending machine, destination boards from different epochs, ticket printing machines, etc..
